Travel Team Tryout Procedures
2008-09
Objective
It is the objective of Cape Cod Canal Youth Hockey (CCCYH) to conduct an annual placement tryout during the Spring. The purpose of the tryout is to place players on teams of compatible skill and ability level. Once completed, the number of teams representing CCCYH the following season in the Yankee and South Shore Conferences will be determined.
Player Options and Responsibilities
Players Responsibilities: Players trying out are responsible for 1) registering BEFORE the tryout date; 2) to arrive at least 30 minutes prior to the time of the tryout in order to register and receive his/her number, 3) be prepared to give it his/her all during the tryout. Skaters will not be allowed to wear jerseys with their names on the back.
C-Level Teams: Players wishing to play at the C level do not need to attend tryouts, but do need to register and pay the registration fee. This is especially true for players moving up from the In-House or Learn To Play Hockey programs and want to use a season of buzzer hockey to learn to play in a more controlled atmosphere. Players not attending tryouts AND not notifying the Coaching Director prior to the tryout dates will be placed on a C Level team.
Tryout Absences: If a player is unable to attend any of his/her scheduled tryout sessions, primarily due to injury or illness, it is vital that the coaching director be informed before the tryout dates. There are procedures in place for handling such absences, which will be explained to the parent(s) at that time. Parents must contact Phil Buttafuoco (pbuttafuoco@lacrossecoaches.org or 508-737-3026) BEFORE the first day of tryouts to request a waiver.
Players who are unable to tryout must be officially registered with CCCYH in order to receive a waiver and be considered for placement on a team. 2008-09 CCCYH Tryout Process.
Goaltenders: Any players who intend to play goaltender must attend a goalie tryout session.
Coaching Applications: Anyone interested in coaching next year is invited to complete a Coaching Application form and CORI form attached to this document. Even if you are coaching this year, we ask that you complete an application so that we know what level(s) you are interested in coaching next year. All coaching applications should be forwarded to Phil Buttafuoco (pbuttafuoco@lacrossecoaches.org) by March 30.
CCCYH Policies and Procedures
Parents should understand these SIGNIFICANT changes to the tryout process in past years. There will NOT be a tryout process during the fall. All tryouts will be completed during the spring.
The tryout process is a consensus process, which places a high value on the coach’s ability to make the proper recommendations.
1. It is a goal of CCCYH to place 13 skaters plus 1 goaltender to each team whenever possible and for C teams NOT to have rosters smaller than A or B teams.
3. Players who do not participate in the tryout process and have not signed a waiver (see waiver section) will be placed at the lowest level within the applicable age level program.
4. New players to the program who miss tryouts will be treated the same as players who missed the tryouts and will start at the C level.
5. Players will be provided numbers and pinnies to wear during tryout.
6. The director and coach can place players who miss tryouts due to a SERIOUS illness or injury at an appropriate level. The CCCYH Board of Directors will reserve the right to use its discretion to place players at the C level if there is an unexcused absence at the tryouts.
TRYOUT FORMAT
The tryouts will be composed of two distinct sessions, skills and scrimmage. These two sessions will be conducted on separate nights.
Skills Session:
1. The skills session of the tryout will consist of skill stations. Evaluators will evaluate each station. The same evaluators will evaluate each station.
2. The coaching director or a designee will select a person to run each skill station. The skill stations will demonstrate skating, stick handling, and shooting.
3. The coaching directors will provide drills to be performed at each station from a predetermined list used for that level tryout.
4. The evaluators can speed up or slow down the drills if they feel it necessary.
5. After the skills session the coaching directors may excuse higher and/or lower skilled players from the scrimmage sessions.
6. The evaluators will grade players on various skills using a 1-10 scale. (Whole numbers only with 1 being the highest and 10 the lowest.)
Scrimmage Session:
The intention of the scrimmage policy is to place players of comparable skills and abilities on the ice at the same time. To accommodate this, we will follow the process outlined below.
1. Following the skills tryout the commissioner of the respective level will use the skills scores and coach’s evaluations to assign a new number to each player to ensure that players are scrimmaging against players with similar skills.
2. The evaluators will grade players on various skills using a 1-10 scale (whole numbers only).
3. Checking will be included in the Bantam and Midget level scrimmages.
Evaluation Method:
For each level there will be an evaluation team as determined by the coaching directors. The evaluation team will be comprised of coaching directors, CCCYH board members, coaches and volunteers. Each evaluator will be posted at different stations on the ice or in the stands. This will insure that all players will have an equal opportunity to be observed. If the CCCYH Board of Directors determines that there are a sufficient number of evaluators, it may drop the high and low score for each player when determining scores for each tryout session.
Team Selection:
In addition to reviewing the evaluations submitted by the current year coach, each player’s scores from the scrimmage and skills session will be combined based on the following weighting process:
a) Mites 60 percent scrimmage and 40 percent skills.
b) Squirts 60 percent scrimmage and 40 percent skills.
c) Pee Wee and above 70 percent scrimmage and 30 percent skills.
Following the scrimmage and skills session the evaluators and commissioner will meet to review the tryout results. The evaluators and commissioner will review the results and make placements based on a consensus of the tryout results. Second year players will be given priority over first year players in the event scores and evaluations are similar.
The commissioner of each level will provide a list of players sorted by team placement (A, B, C) for Board approval. Disagreements amongst evaluators, which cannot be resolved, shall be resolved by the commissioner. The recommendation by the commissioner shall be presented to the Board. The CCCYH Board of Directors shall have responsibility for selecting each team.
Notification. Team rosters shall be posted on the CCCYH website approximately one week after the tryout sessions. This will provide the Board of Directors appropriate amount of time to review the tryout results. This will be the official notification. A calling post and email will be distributed to each family notifying them when the rosters have been posted.
